14th May: The Great War: A Close Call by Steven Hollowell. In this, the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice, the final talk in a series of three on the Great War will consider the final German push which led to the November cease-fire and how this affected Cogenhoe families. 7-30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue Cogenhoe.

 
18th June (Afternoon):Old Cures and Remedies by Kate Wills. A sweeping look at cures and remedies through the ages – particularly from Victorian times and on.2.30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue, Cogenhoe.


6th August: The Annual Whiston Lecture by Dr Steven Hollowell on Henry Chichele: Local boy made good. The son of a Higham Ferrers merchant, Henry Chichele went on to become Henry V’s most famous Archbishop of Canterbury.  Was it Chichele who caused the postponement of the Dissolution of the Monasteries for 100 years? 7-30 pm, at St Mary’s Church Whiston. Follow signs off Castle Ashby Road and park in lane. Allow time for walking to church.


15th –19th August: Cogenhoe & Whiston Heritage Society and NottinghamUniversity -Trip to The Western Front. Members are invited to join the 4th annual trip to the battlefields.  Travelling by small coach, the party will be based at Arras and will include a trip to Waterloo as well as guided tours of the World War One battlefields.  Details from Dr Steven Hollowell.

 

24th September (Afternoon): Northamptonshire – Behind the Scenes with Richard Deacon. An illustrated talk based on Richard’s career which involved visiting many local venues –some of which are now lost including many of the railway scenes. 2.30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall,York Avenue, Cogenhoe.
 

29th October:  Agricultural Labourers by Ian Waller. From the Swing Riots onwards, this talk examines the lives of an agricultural labourer and his family and also where to find a wealth of records relating to them. 7-30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall,York Avenue, Cogenhoe.

 

10th December: Mummers Plays and other Seasonal Customs with Barry Care and the Moulton Morris Men. Christmas was a time when the old year gave way to the new and marked by customs such as mummers plays.  Barry and friends will demonstrate some of these old practices. 7-30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue, Cogenhoe. Seasonal refreshments will be served.


27th December

Annual Christmas Walks (A long walk and a short one!) with Dr Steven Hollowell. Both walks begin together at Cogenhoe Village Hall and then set out for Brafield via Spring banks.  Those on the short walk (21/2 miles) will return to Cogenhoe via the Old Shoemaker’s Path and Short Lane. The long walk (5¼ miles) will carry on to Denton, returning back via the Warren Wall and Short Lane. Note: Beceause of the time of the year, it will be dark before we arrive back. Start 1.30pm Village Hall.Sensible clothes and footwear essential. Mulled wine and mince pies served from 3-00 pm in the VillageHall– please leave muddy boots at the door. As always, non-walkers most welcome.

7th January (Afternoon):The Roman Army in Britain by Juris Trede. The first of three talks looking at local life in Roman Britain, local Romano-British re-enactor Juris Trede will demonstrate Roman military costume. 2.30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue, Cogenhoe.


11th February: Roman Trade in the Piddington Area by Roy Friendship-Taylor. After over 25 years excavating and researching the Piddington Roman villa, what can it tell us about trade in the area? 7-30 pm York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue, Cogenhoe.

 

6th March (Friday Evening): 2009 AGM followed by Ian Meadows talking on Aspects of Roman Life and Agriculture in the NeneValley. An illustrated talk which amongst other things, deals with the Roman vineyard at Wollaston. York Room, Cogenhoe Village Hall, York Avenue, Cogenhoe. Annual meeting starts at 7.30 pm. and the annual lecture at 7.45 pm.
